Learn: Tips for Cooking Perfect Rice
A lot of friends have asked, how do you make perfect rice?
If you have 3 minutes, you can watch this clip of Jo Koy. It hilariously explains that all you need is rice, water and the line of your finger. Jo Koy is 100% correct that Asian people do not use measuring cups. It doesn’t matter how much rice, how much water or how big your finger is. It’s a true science, just kidding, it’s actually quite the opposite. I’ve never used any measuring tools to cook rice.
Here’s a quick tutorial for cooking rice.
1. Always wash your rice! When it comes out of the bag and you put water in it, it will be murky. Wash that off!
2. Swish the rice around, dump out the water and keep going until the water is clear. It should look more like this.
3. Let that rice soak. I usually leave it for about 20 minutes. You’ll see that the grains have puffed up and have become a bit whiter.
4. Once the rice is nice and soaked, take your pointer finger and put enough water in that it reaches the first crease from the tip. Don’t ask me why or how this works, it just does.
5. Now you’re ready to cook the rice. Pop it in the cooker and you’ll have perfect rice!
Our family always had a pot of rice on. Didn’t matter the day or type of food we were eating, someone would always want rice. Now you know how to make a perfect bowl! If you’re making sushi rice, put a few pieces of kombu on top while it cooks. It’ll give it a little extra flavor that is perfect when the rice vinegar and salt are added.
